Arrested Development: talk on Twitter & Tumblr

One minute after midnight (PDT!) on Sunday, May 26th, Arrested Development (AD) fans will be gathered around their glowing computer screens as the entire fourth season premieres on Netflix. Excited fans have been discussing the countdown to their streaming binges on Twitter and Tumblr, and as Gene Parmesan is unavailable to disclose their discussions with you, you’ll just have to stick with us instead. (Although it’s entirely possible we’re just him in costume.)

Tumblr

As of yesterday- four days away from the season four premiere- 486.6k Tumblr users generated 19.1k posts with over 1 million notes, since we started tracking on April 22nd. Posts about Arrested Development on Tumblr spiked on May 13th (that day accounts for about 8% of total posts so far; we’ll get to why in a minute), and note activity on posts spiked before that, on April 24th: the day that character posters were released.

On May 13th, the big spike in posts came from the release of the first trailer for season four, which can be found in the second of ten most popular AD posts. From April up to this week, the most popular posts from the Tumblr discussion came mostly from fan-run Arrested Development focused blogs; half of the top ten posts came from the aptly named The Bluth Company, including the most popular post overall. (Usually seen as a GIF, that moment from the show is just as fun when drawn out into a high-quality photo series.)

And for those familiar with Tumblr’s format, it’s no surprise that photo posts were the most popular: 12.7k of the total 19.1k posts were photo posts, trailed by 3.5k text posts and under 1.5k video posts. The show title was far and away the most popular tag, featured in 11.5k of the total posts.

Lucille naturally gets two tags of her own, even if Tumblr is something she would probably be suspicious of.

Twitter

Out of the total 105.4k tweets made mentioning Arrested Development on Twitter, activity spiked on different days than on Tumblr, with the most contributors (13.9k) sharing the most tweets (16.1k) on May 20th:

Overall since May 14th there have been 65.1k tweets from 75.7k contributors; that averages out to a little over 11.7k tweets a day, with nearly 1.5 tweets per contributor (we imagine those half-tweets wear cutoff shorts all the time, even in the shower).

The two most retweeted tweets came from unofficial news and quote account bluthquotes and Arrested Development series creator Mitch Hurwitz. They had 2.3k and 2k retweets respectively:

Really the most burning question all of this has left us with is this: is it May 26th yet? We should probably all use the remaining days to stock up on juice boxes, Cornballers and frozen bananas since we’ll be sleeping through all the Memorial Day cookouts with our families to spend hours with the Bluth clan instead.

Perhaps you’ve heard the news that Yahoo! has bought Tumblr. Rumors about the deal started swirling last week, on the night of Thursday, 5/16, and the deal was officially announced on Monday, 5/20.

Just 300 posts were shared on Tumblr about the rumor on Thursday. On Friday it was up to 1,216 posts, and by Sunday there were more 14,300 posts generating 757k reblogs and 420k likes! Over the past few days, more than 29,600 posts about Tumblr + Yahoo! were reblogged 2.5 million times by more than 1 million people.

The top post about the news is from ruinedchildhood and has generated 88,500 total notes, including more than 55,600 reblogs! Check out that reblog tree; more than 29,400 reblogs are more than 9 degrees removed from the original post.

And Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer’s announcement about the deal has received 5,578 reblogs and 4,387 notes so far (and that’s still climbing).

I love this scene so much, and you know why?

That was Jake’s favorite cup. One of his favorite possessions and he throws it out the window to help teach Finn something important about life that we all need to learn: To stop worrying about small things.

Yeah, he does go get it later, but he had no way of knowing that the cup wouldn’t break. For all he knew, it really was gone forever. And he was okay with that, because it would help him teach Finn something he needs to know.

Reasons why Jake is my favorite.

At 5:12 a.m., San Francisco was awoken by violent shaking leading to one of the deadliest natural disasters to ever hit California.

The earthquake ruptured gas lines and water mains causing the city to burn for three days.

In the first photo, the fires sweep into the city from the waterfront as residents make a mass exodus in the foreground.

In the second photo, firemen attempt to control the blazes.

The third photo shows a fire in progress.

The fourth photo, one of Doc’s most famous images of the earthquake, policemen patrol Market Street near The Call building.

The top tags for Game of Thrones this month - interesting to see what character and actor names are most popular.

Game of Thrones season 3 premiered on HBO last night, and Tumblr’s conversation about it spiked for the occasion: out of 118k GoT-related posts in the past month, nearly a quarter (just over 23%) were made the night of the premiere.

Overall, 180k Tumblr users posted, reblogged and liked GoT posts on March 31st, earning a total of 354.5k notes so far.

What were some of the popular tags? The name of the show and its most common abbreviation - GoT - took the top two spots and were followed with a mixture of character names (Daenerys Targaryen, Sansa Stark, Jon Snow), the actors who portray those characters (Emilia Clark as Daenerys, Sophie Turner as Sansa, and Kit Harington as Jon Snow; see the full cast and crew here), and the name and abbreviation for the book series the show is based on (A Song of Ice and Fire or ASOIAF, written by George R.R. Martin).
